Why Take the SAT/ACT?

  • Each of these college entrance tests are considered a fair and reliable measure of college and career readiness for students.  The test questions reflect the work students are doing every day in high school courses to prepare for college success.  Visit sat.org/k12 for an in-depth look at the test specifications for the SAT; and for ACT preparation -www.act.org/the-act/testprep.
  • When used in combination with high school GPA, SAT/ACT test scores are shown to be a good predictors of a student’s potential to succeed in college.
  • The SAT covers core content areas essential for success in college- reading, writing and language, and math. The SAT has four components- five with the optional 50-minute essay with each component timed separately.
  • The ACT includes four subject areas; math, reading, science, English and optional 40 minute writing test.
  • The vast majority of colleges accept scores from either test. It is recommended that students research their college choices to determine specific testing requirements for admission; i.e. SAT and/or the ACT. Students are encouraged to register for the writing component of either test. Consult with your school counselor and/or college web site for additional information on admission testing and score report requirements.
