Course Details: Studio in Art meets daily for a full year. You will receive 1 full credit and this course fulfils your art/music requirement for graduation.

Course Description: This is the prerequisite and introductory art course at the high school level with art creation as our primary focus. This year we will learn about the artmaking process and build your comfort and skills by exploring a variety of art media. Each new media will include a skill building lesson to build confidence and a creativity challenge project to showcase your learned skills and allow for personal expression. Throughout the year we will explore many art media including but not limited to drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and digital media.  Throughout the year we will learn about artists from the past and present, learn how artists use sketchbooks and practice keeping our own, learn how to critique art and provide peer feedback, learn how to write an artist statement for our work, visit a local art gallery, learn from a visiting professional artist, and curate our artwork for our district art show. For our final project of the year, each student will select the art media and subject matter of their choosing, plan and create their own artwork.

Objectives: Students will work towards successful knowledge and understanding of the 5 layers of an Iroquois artist.

1.     Art is for Everyone.

2.     Art is a Process and Artists use the Studio Habits of Mind.

3.     Artists Explore art Media and Develop Skill.

4.     Artisan Communities Work Together.

5.     Artists Grow as Lifelong Learners.

Required materials and Resources: All materials needed will be provided in class. Please bring your sketchbook and a pencil to class daily. Throughout the year if you take interest in a spesific media, I will suggest items that you can purchase for additional exploration, but it is not necessary.

Classroom community items: If you would like to contribute to our classroom, we are in need tissues and unscented baby wipes. If you think you have an art material your family would like to donate, please contact Mr. Napierala.

Expectations: In my classroom, it is my hope that we practice:

1. Open-mindedness: We will stay open to trying new things and showing our best effort.

2. Community: We will treat others kindly in this space. Creating can make people feel vulnerable so we will work hard to make everyone feel safe, comfortable, and valued here.

3. Professionalism: We will take care of the art materials and studio space, please clean up after yourself.

4. Participation: Be on time and be ready to give our class your attention. Don’t allow your phone to become a problem. You are expected to participate in art making activities, writing assignments, and class discussions.

Grading Policy

In studio art your grade will be determined using a total point system. Grading will be based on your successful completion of criteria to help reduce the subjective nature of art.

Project Grades: Students will receive a project specific rubric outlining the success criteria at the beginning of each major art study or final art project. The total number of points will vary based on the total number of criteria for the project. This will be graded using the 0123 rubric for each criterion.

Checkpoints: I will often provide verbal feedback and checkpoints based on the Project rubric. This type of meeting with the student is required but unassessed. The purpose is to help guide students towards being successful in their final project.

All assignments are due on the date specified in class.  However, if an assignment is turned in on the due date and you are not happy with your grade, you may re-submit your assignment to be re-graded up to one week after the day it was returned to you.  The new grade will be the one that I keep in the grade book.  You may do this for each assignment, but only once for each assignment. Late work does not get this option.

What should I do with graded work? Please keep all your artwork neatly in your assigned drawer. At times throughout the year, we will display artwork throughout the school or in art shows and it needs to be accessible.

Communication Protocols: We will be using Microsoft Teams this year. All assignments and related materials will be housed there for you to access whenever you need them. If you would like to message me, Email will be best: NNapierala@Iroquoiscsd.org

Electronic Device Policy: Laptops may be used for photo references, digital portfolios, and research on specified occasions. I ask that cell phones are away during class demonstrations, review, and new instruction. During studio time you may use your phone to listen to music (Low enough volume to hear others communicating with you, headphones off/earbuds out if I am addressing the class or offering checkpoint critiques.) Do not let your cellphone become a problem.

A few extra notes…

  1. Please get your work and be sitting BY THE TIME THE BELL RINGS.
  2. You can sit wherever you want unless there is a problem, in which case I choose your seat, no questions asked.
