Pearl Harbor bombed
At 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time, a Japanese dive bomber bearing the red symbol of the Rising Sun of Japan on its wings appears out of the clouds above the island of Oahu. A swarm of 360 Japanese warplanes followed, descending on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in a ferocious assault. The surprise attack struck a critical blow against the U.S. Pacific fleet and drew the United States irrevocably into World War II.

Happy Friday!! I hope you are all making plans for something fun this weekend!!
I read a quotation today that says:
"If you were born without wings, do nothing to prevent them from growing."
This is my challenge for YOU. You have a unique situation with your schooling right now. It is your challenge and your duty to make it work for YOU. It won't look like anyone else's education, because you are the only one who can control it. I am so proud of the way you all have been working and staying with the virtual program. I think we are trying to find ways to not just survive, but THRIVE! You all have incredibly creative minds, and I hope that if you have an idea for our class and ways we can keep our instruction going and growing and awesome, you will share it with me. :) I am incredibly proud to be your teacher. Let your wings grow!!
** We discussed during last period the rumor that Coco Chanel (who said that quote) was a Nazi spy... I was ignorant of that when I saw this quote from her. After doing some research, I see that indeed, there is a possiblity that it is true. At the very least she had an affair with a Nazi officer, which is very disappointing indeed. There is some very interesting source material that you can find online supporting the possiblity that this is true. How sad.
I am giving you a challenge to find a quote that is just as inspirational, or better, and share it with us!!
Thanks for starting the conversation guys!! Context is as relevent today as it was thousands of years ago!!
Today: I would like you to spend about 20 minutes coming up with answers to the following questions. You may use images if you can find them! You may do the work here, or via email, just please be sure to send me a message so I know where to find it. Once you have completed this task, you may work on finalizing your anatomy project, which is due on Monday, along with your one-pager.
QUESTION:
Describe ONE way in which political structures of Europeans differed from those of the Ottomans in the period 1450-1750.

AP World History Day 1:
Half of you are here and half of you are at home. My challenge question for you at the beginning of the period is to think of the word "pride." What are things a person should be proud of? Think of times in your life when you have felt proud. Then think of one particular moment of which you are proud. I want you to remember how you felt in that moment, and I want that to be your goal for our class this year. Will it take work? Absolutely. Will it take dedication? Certainly. Will you want to give up? Maybe. But don't give up. It will be worth it.
Today we are going over our syllabus (located below) and the expectations of class. You will get a textbook to take home with you, but you will also need to purchase a book for the year. It is an INCREDIBLE resource for the class. It is the AMSCO AP World History Modern book. It will be in the book store for 26 dollars soon. (Stay tuned for its arrival!)
You may at times feel overwhelmed this year, but don't worry! I am here for you, and we are goign to conquer this together! I am so excited to start this new year, and to take on these challenges with you! I can't wait to get to know you all and to make this the best and most memorable year of school ever.

In 1964 he had failed the U.S. Armed Forces qualifying test because his writing and spelling skills were sub par. However, in early 1966, the tests were revised and Ali was reclassified as 1A. When notified of this status, he declared that he would refuse to serve in the United States Army.

1991 - U.S.A. Portable Phones
1991 : Due to the increase in Portable Phones many golf clubs have banned the use on the golf course because of the distraction to other players, they must now be turned off when starting the round of Golf. Hello!!
Happy Friday!
For this weekend, I would like you to work on the DBQ below. You will find 2 attachments:
1 - The planning page
2- The DBQ
FIRST: Please fill in the planning page to the best of your ability. Be SPECIFIC! The goal here, is for you to fill the planner in so that you don't need to go back and look at the documents again. (This will make it so you won't have to worry about toggling back and forth between screens while you take the exam - once you fill in the chart, you won't have to look at the documents again.)
SECOND: Use the planner to guide your writing and your context and thesis.
REMEMBER: * Group your documents for 2 body paragraphy (not 3)
* YOU are ALL very capable and very good writers, and you can do this.
You may either TYPE OR Write your essay by hand and take photos. (as with the exam)
**** Important: PRINT the planning page ONLY, and fill it in by hand. (Practice for exam day)
Email or send a 'remind' message to me if you have any questions.

April 22
Hello! Happy Earth Day!! It's the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day today :)
Your challenge: Think of something YOU can do today, even if it's just to pick up one piece of trash beside the road. :) Small things make big differences!
Have a splendid day!!
The first Earth Day in 1970 mobilized millions of Americans for the protection of the planet. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans — 10% of the U.S. population at the time — took to the streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward for our planet. The first Earth Day is credited with launching the modern environmental movement and is now recognized as the planet’s largest civic event.
Earth Day led to passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States, including the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. Many countries soon adopted similar laws, and in 2016, the United Nations chose Earth Day as the day to sign the Paris Climate Agreement into force.

Happy Monday!!
Today in history:
Joan of Arc relieves Orleans (Source)
During the Hundred Years' War, the 17-year-old French peasant Joan of Arc leads a French force in relieving the city of Orleans, besieged by the English since October.
At the age of 16, "voices" of Christian saints told Joan to aid Charles, the French dauphin, in gaining the French throne and expelling the English from France. Convinced of the validity of her divine mission, Charles furnished Joan with a small force of troops. She led her troops to Orleans, and on April 29, as a French sortie distracted the English troops on the west side of the city, Joan entered unopposed by its eastern gate. Bringing needed supplies and troops into the besieged city, she also inspired the French to a passionate resistance and through the next week led the charge during a number of skirmishes and battles. On one occasion, she was even hit by an arrow, but after dressing her wounds she returned to the battle. On May 8, the siege of Orleans was broken, and the English retreated.
I hope you all had a fantastic weekend!!
For today, I am attaching a review file for you to enjoy :) Please read, highlight/annotate, and create a chart for the different parts of the world that are discussed. You don't have to make a SPICE-T chart just yet, just read and sort the info.
Please do this by WEDNESDAY, April 22. (by the end of the day.)
Thanks for being AWESOME!!

1935 - U.S.A. Black Sunday
1935 : Twenty of the worst Black Blizzards that occurred throughout the Dust Bowl years happen on a single day often referred to as Black Sunday which turned day into night. Witnesses reported that they could not see five feet in front of them at certain points and the storms traveled thousands of miles across the country dumping the black mess wherever they went. It should be remembered that these storms did not look like a normal dust storm as they were black and given nicknames like Black Dark Blizzards and Black Rollers because visibility was reduced to a few feet. The Dust Bowl years were caused by misuse of land through intensive farming with little thought of soil conservation and years of sustained drought causing millions of acres of farmland became useless, and hundreds of thousands forced to leave their homes.
More about the Dust Bowl
Hello!
I have been thoroughly enjoying your 'house' assignments! Thank you for being so creative! I am attaching a SPICE-T chart for units 1 and 2. Even though you already did unit 1, I think this chart might help you organize your material and help you to understand the types of informatin to include in a SPICE-T chart. Please use your One pagers and your unit 1 chart and fill this in the best you can. Also, keep the color coding going! I would like this to be done by THURSDAY - by the end of the day.
Tomorrow during our 'dbq workshop/office hours, I will go over some DBQ wrting skills. Don't worry if you can't make it, I will record the meeting and try to upload it for you. :)
Have a great day!!

I hope you all had a great weekend!! As you read above, today is the anniversary of the Apollo 13 accident. It happened in 1970, while the Cold War was going on. How do you think the USSR felt when this happened to the US mission? If you have time, try to find out - you may be surprised.
You have no new work today :) Don't forget that you have your "quarantine house" and thesis/context work due tomorrow. I hope you are all well!

For today, there is no work, except to meet me at 2:00 at the TEAMS meeting! I will go over the new exam with you and I will try to answer any questions you may have.
I am still working my way through grades. I has become evident to me that the best way for you to submit assignments is through email. If you can't do that, just send a message telling me which file to look under in Onenote. It takes a while to go through all the files in all of your onenotes just to find one assignment - and sometimes I still can't find it. 🤔
Most of you are in great shape.
Have a great day and I'll see you all at 2:00!!

It's Friday!
You have all done such an amazing job this week! I am very proud of all the work you have done on the new information.
Do you miss one-pagers? I do!! I miss seeing the different things you all found from the same information. And I miss the
wonderful pictures some of you cam up with!
For the weekend, I would like you to do only ONE thing, and then take a BREAK from your computer. (I intend to!)
I would like you to find the song "We didn't start the fire" by Billy Joel. Once you have found it, listen to it and try to catch all the references to
the cold war era. There is a great Youtube video with pictures that go along with the words! See if you can find it. It's super interesting.
You can look up the lyrics too, just so you don't miss anything.
Then, make a LIST (more than 3) of the things you find most interesting from that era and why.
BONUS: Find a contemporary song that does the same thing for today's world. :)
Have some fun with it!
It's not due until MONDAY, so take a braek from your computer.
Thanks for being AWESOME!!

I hope you are all doing superbly well today!
There is so much to talk about regarding your exam!
I know this is going to make you all very sad, but try to control your emotions...
You do NOT have to do any more one-pagers!
They are not going to test you on new information. I do, however, think it's important for you to know, so we will be finishing through the review packet I sent along last week.
For today, you have (2) things to do:
1 - page 5 in the review packet. (as usual, email me some kind of proof that it was done 🙂)
2- Go to the AP Central website and READ the info on your exam. Then write a brief reflection or response in the TEAMS site I created for our class.
