  •  The Annual BAND Against Bullying Program: 
              This dignity-themed high school performing arts competition was created in September, 2012 to raise community awareness of bullying-related issues and  empower
               youth to be advocates for change in their homes, schools, and communities. Proceeds from the event support bullying prevention and intervention efforts in the
               participating schools, as well as the continued development of the BAND Against Bullying Program. Further information about this event can be found at
               nybandagainstbullying.org.  BAND Against Bullying is presented by M&T Bank, UB, and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

 

  • The Big Event:

BAND Against Bullying’s Annual event founded in Buffalo, NY has drawn hundreds of students to participate in creating awareness of bullying-related issues while participating in a fun competition with local celebrity guest judges. This year's event will celebrate BAND's 5th anniversary, and will take place on April 27, 2017 at Shea's 710 Theatre, formerly Studio Arena, at 710 Main St., Buffalo.

Ø      One act per school performs

Ø      Students collaborate, illustrate creativity, and spread awareness

Ø      Each act combines multiple forms of art (singing, dancing, video, musical instruments…)

Ø      All related to Dignity Awareness

 
                                                Dignity for All Students Act:

  • The Dignity for All Students Act, also known as the Dignity Act, was signed into law on September 13, 2010 to provide NYS public, elementary and secondary schools with a safe and supportive environment on school property (i.e. school grounds, school bus, or any school function) and an atmosphere free of any discrimination, intimidation, harassment, taunting, and/or bullying. 

 

2017: Plans for the 2017 competition are currently underway. If you are interested in joining the group and participating, please contact me. There are openings for a variety of talent. Dress rehearsal at 710 Theatre will take place on Tuesday, 4/25/17, and performances will take place on Thursday, 4/27/16.
 
 
2015:  Michaela Hoeflich, Ryan Cass, Will Jenney, & James Garvey provided music and vocals for the Iroquois group as the Will Jenney Family Band. Other students who participated in this competition are: Kirsti Aylor and Abigayle Greier (American Sign Language interpretation), Natalie Bucholtz and Lydia Bleyle (dance), and Alden Tanski and Bailey Blair (artwork). Students from Mrs. Russell's Studio Art class also created pieces that were compiled into a video. Students performed, "Here Comes the Sun" as a message that things can get better, as well as to focus on bystanders and spread awareness that you can be "the sun" to someone who is being bullied, brightening their day by getting involved, speaking up, and spreading a message of intolerance for bullying.
