Applied Geometry Student Letter/Syllabus
Dear Students:
Welcome to Applied Geometry. We are looking forward to teaching you some elements of Geometry and providing you with a productive and fun year in math.
Listed below are the supplies you will need for the year. Please have your supplies and be ready to work by your next class.
- A three-ring binder specifically to be used for math. Notes may be taken on paper or in One Note.
- A calculator (a scientific calculator is fine, make sure it has trig functions)
- Plenty of lined paper.
- Plenty of graph paper.
- Pencils, Pens, Stylus
- 12” Ruler
- Compass for Constructions
The following policies are expected to be followed in our classroom:
- When the bell rings please be in your seat and ready to work.
- Arrive with all the proper materials. You will not be able to go back to your locker for them.
- NO FOOD, DRINK, or CELL PHONES in class.
- Be respectful of all others.
- Maintain a positive attitude that will be conducive to learning.
Applied Geometry Course Syllabus
Listed below are the topics studied in Applied Geometry, along with the approximate amount of time spent on each unit. There will also be opportunities for review within many of the units as well as at the end of the year. Most units include vocabulary as well as Geometric investigations and projects.
Unit 1 – The Basics of Geometry - Includes points, lines, planes, angles and other terminology used in geometry (3 weeks)
Unit 2 – Transformations - Reflections, Rotations and Translations (2 weeks)
Unit 3 – Reasoning - Distance and Midpoint formulas, angle and segment bisectors, and complementary and supplementary angles (3 weeks)
Unit 4 – Lines in a Plane - Perpendicular and parallel lines, parallel lines cut by a transversal and its related angles formed, and skew lines (3 weeks)
Unit 5 – Classifying Triangles - Classification of triangles by angles or sides, congruent triangles, Pythagorean Theorem, Midsegment Theorem, sum of interior and exterior angles, and inequalities in triangles (3 weeks)
Unit 6 – Similarity - Ratio and Proportion, similar triangles and Dilations (3 weeks)
Unit 7 – Right Triangles - Right triangles, special right triangles, Pythagorean Theorem and its converse, and trigonometric functions (3 weeks)
Unit 8 – Circle Geometry - Tangents, central angles and arcs, chords, finding an epicenter and writing the equation of a circle (3 weeks)
Unit 9 – Properties of a Parallelogram – Properties of quadrilaterals, pentagons and hexagons, finding the sum of interior and exterior angles of polygons (3 weeks)
Unit 10 - Solid Geometry - Surface area and volume of prisms, cylinders, pyramids and cones (3 weeks)
Unit 11-Area and Perimeter – Area, perimeter, and circumference of polygons and circles(2 weeks)
Unit 12 - Constructions - Creation of geometric objects (congruent segments, congruent angles, perpendicular bisectors, etc.) using a compass and straightedge (3 weeks)
Subjects reviewed include graphing of lines, writing their equations, factoring, and problem solving.
Projects include a transformation project, tiny house project, polygon project, and a playground project.
Course expectations:
- There will be homework most days. Homework is 25% of the quarterly grade.
- There will be several types of assessments during each unit. Quizzes will be worth 25% and tests and projects will be worth 50% of the quarterly grade.
- The final grade will be calculated by taking the average of the four marking periods and the final exam grade.
